Samsung, Intel, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Clearwire, Sprint Create Alliance for WiMAX Technology
June 13, 2008
Samsung, Intel, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Clearwire, and Sprint have created the OPA (Open Patent Alliance), seeking to promote WiMAX technology, devices, and applications worldwide and enlarging the global WiMAX industry, Nikkei Electronics Asia reported. The OPA intends to create a competitive yet open IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) model by establishing a WiMAX patent pool, thereby enabling participants to access a broader array of patent licenses at a more predictable cost. In addition to the six founders, the OPA is also seeking participation of six to nine more investors from the worldwide WiMAX ecosystem.
